उपिंदर सिंह अशोक विश्वविद्यालय (सोनीपत) के इतिहास विभाग में प्रोफेसर हैं। उन्होंने सेंट स्टीफेंस कॉलेज और और दिल्ली विश्वविद्यालय में अध्ययन के बाद मैकगिल यूनिवर्सिटी, मॉन्ट्रियल से पीएचडी की उपाधि प्राप्त की। उन्होंने 1981 से 2004 तक सेंट स्टीफेंस कॉलेज और उसके बाद (2004–2018) दिल्ली विश्वदिद्यालय के इतिहास विभाग में अध्यापन किया। वे Netherlands Government Reciprocal Fellowship (1985–1986), Ancient India and Iran Trust/Wallace India Visiting Fellowship (2009), Daniel Ingalls Fellowship at the Harvard-Yenching Institute (2005), और Erasmus Mundus Fellowship at the University of Leuven (2010) प्राप्त कर चुकी हैं। 2009 में उनको Infosys Science Foundation की ओर से Infosys Prize in Social Sciences–History प्राप्त हुआ। उनकी लिखी पुस्तकों में Kings, Brāhmanas, and Temples in Orissa: An Epigraphic Study (AD 300–1147) (1994); Ancient Delhi (1999); The Discovery of Ancient India: Early Archaeologists and the Beginnings of Archaeology (2004); A History of Ancient and Early Medieval India: From the Stone Age to the Twelfth Century (2008); और Political Violence in Ancient India (2017) हैं। उन्होंने Delhi: Ancient History (2006); Ancient India: New Research (co-edited with Nayanjot Lahiri, 2009); Rethinking Early Medieval India (2011); Asian Encounters: Exploring Connected Histories (co-edited with Parul Pandya Dhar, 2014); और Buddhism in Asia: Revival and Reinvention (co-edited with Nayanjot Lahiri, 2016) पुस्तकों का संपादन किया। उन्होंने बच्चों के लिए भी एक पुस्तक लिखी, Mysteries of the Past: Archaeological Sites in India (2002)। उनकी शोध में अभिरुचि के वर्तमान विषयों में प्राचीन भारतीय राजनीतिक अवधारणाएं और दक्षिण तथा दक्षिणपूर्व एशिया के बीच संबंध शामिल हैं।
